This past weekend Exor Games hosted it's Cycle 5 Modern RCQ which saw 28 players battle it out for their spot at Cycle 5's Regional Championship in Ottawa next year. This was our first Modern RCQ since January and the turnout suggested people were happy to the format's return to the RCQ circuit!
If anyone knows how we do things here at Exor, we like to spice it up a bit! During our Lord of the Rings Pre-Release we gave away replicas of The One Ring that glowed under blacklight with the date of the pre-release. And for our Commander Master's Pre-Release we gave away crystal Lotus's. In keeping up with tradition we decided to have some medals made for our Top 8 competitors. Take a look for yourself...
Medals were awarded to all Top 8 finishers with the tournament winner receiving an additional unique medal.
We caught up with the event's winner William Leake to ask him about his preparation and deck choice for the event.
"I wasn’t able to find time during the summer months to play much but once I heard about the RCQ I knew I had to play. After being away for so long I knew I needed to find a deck that I was able to play well and one that I was able to go in depth with to better understand the lines of play. So what better deck then amulet titan!"
William is happy.
"The deck provides you with multiple different ways to win the game through Valakut, Urza’s Saga and Primeval Titan. The complexity of the deck and the ability to practice games by myself made the deck a perfect choice for me."
After seeing several Scam decks at the top tables at the Face to Face Open in Fredericton just a few weeks ago Leake said he made some changes to the decklist with this in mind.
"I was expecting to see a lot of Rakdos Scam in the tournament which is this decks worst possible matchup because of the maindeck Blood Moons, the early pressure in the form of Ragavan, and the hand disruption. So I decided to play four sideboard Leyline of Sanctity specifically for that matchup. After having been away from Modern for so long I wasn't entirely sure what people were going to bring other than Scam so I also added one maindeck Otawara to make sure I had a get out of jail free ticket for any situations I may have not been ready for."
"I want to make sure I take a second to thank Exor Games for hosting the RCQ and having a good game environment to bring players from all over the Maritimes together. Also thanks to Wyatt Reynolds for staying up late the night before convincing me to stay on Amulet Titan because I most definitely would have switch last second out of fear.
